Lucton Student Internships2023-04-27

At Lucton School Chongqing, we had a special assembly recently which was hosted by the English Internship Team.
The English Internship Programme gives students an opportunity to get involved in organising events, competitions, assemblies and everything English related at the school. They help to motivate other students and to improve their English abilities through the school environment. This assembly was special because it was the first time, but surely not the last time, that students have been the ones to host an assembly.

As part of this assembly, the English Interns shared a comedy sketch video that they made themselves in English classes. Drama is a fun and effective way for students to learn language skills and also other skills such as teamwork, organisation and it is good for their confidence. With some support and guidance from their teacher, the students created a concept, wrote a script, practiced their lines and actions, performed, filmed and then edited the video themselves. The interns then shared this with the school in assembly to howls of laughter and joy from the school community.

The comedy sketch revolves around a gentleman looking for a good place to eat food, after turning down a number of strange and interesting options, he decides to try some vegetarian food. However, he is in for a surprise because the waitress is hard-of-hearing. When he tries to order “steak”, she thinks he says “stick” and because they sound similar in English. When he threatens to “leave” she thinks he orders “leaves”. The chef is reluctant to cook such food for a customer but does not want to disappoint by refusing and wants to live up to the promise of being able to cook “anything” and make it a masterpiece. However, the results are anything but…
After this, the English Intern hosts invited all students in the school up in groups to play a speaking game where they had to try and read aloud some very difficult tongue-twisters. These are a great way of practicing spoken pronunciation and pose a challenge to even the most fluent of speakers. The students competed in groups against their peers with the tongue-twisters becoming ever more difficult as older students came up to the front to try. Congratulations to the winners in each category, Billy Z, Iris H, Oscar Z, Albert Y, Sans W, Daniel D and Sylva H! They received house points as a reward and a round of applause from the whole school.

The English Interns did a great job of hosting the assembly. They worked hard to make a very creative comedy sketch which the school enjoyed tremendously. They also lead a very fun game which challenged the students and was good speaking practice. In the future the English Interns will continue to help the English Dept. to improve English throughout the school. We look forward to seeing more contributions from students leading assemblies in the future!
