On 6 May 2023, the coronation of King Charles III took place at Westminster Abbey in London. To celebrate this historic moment, landmarks across the UK all turned on their lights.
Meanwhile, the King's Birthday Party celebrating King Charles III's Coronation was held in Guiyang, Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing in Southwest China, where Lucton School Chongqing was invited to participate as a Platinum Sponsor, and the local political and business elites all gathered on the spot to celebrate.
The British Coronation is one of the grandest and most important ceremonies in the history of the British royal family, signifying the succession of a new King or Queen. Originating in the 9th century, the coronation ceremony is a symbol of British tradition and royalty.
The King's Birthday, which is being celebrated, is the “official birthday” instead of the actual birthday of King Charles III. The tradition of official birthday celebrations for the British royal family began with Edward VII, whose real birthday was on 9 November 1841 in the winter. The weather then was cold and bad in England, and Edward VII, wishing to celebrate on a bright day, set up an official birthday, and the tradition continued. With the succession of King Charles III, the celebration was renamed from the Queen's Birthday to the King's Birthday.
Prince Edward, the then Earl of Wessex, son of Queen Elizabeth II, visited Lucton on 25 June 2008 to celebrate Lucton’s tercentenary and officially named the new heated indoor poor the “Wessex Pool”. (Prince Edward has been officially announced as the Duke of Edinburgh in 2023.)
On 8 June, the British Consulate General in Chongqing hosted the King's Birthday Party celebrating King Charles III's Coronation in Chongqing. The event was lit up by the smooth sound of Scottish bagpipes, and there was a choral performance by students from Lucton School Chongqing. The event was attended by government officials from the Municipal Government, the Municipal Commission of Commerce, the Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism, as well as outstanding representatives from relevant Chinese and foreign business and social organisations.
At the last King's Birthday Party celebrating King Charles III's Coronation in Southwest China, the then British Consul General in Chongqing, Mr. Stephen Ellison, expressed a fond farewell to Chongqing city, quoting the poem "No water is enough when you have crossed the sea. No cloud is beautiful but that which crowns the peak." to describe the irreplaceability of Chongqing in his heart. At the same time, he also expressed his gratitude to Lucton School Chongqing for being a Platinum Sponsor, and that Lucton School Chongqing would continue to promote the cooperation between the UK and Chongqing in the field of education, and build a platform for cultural exchange between UK and China.
Last but not least, a big round of applause for the wonderful performance by Lucton students.
