But learning English properly is not something one can achieve in a day. It is not easy to master vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking, listening so quickly. MyON Library of Renaissance, the world's largest English graded reading and evaluation company, is a personalised online English-reading library centred on students. At Lucton School Chongqing, we implement myON Library reading programme, improve students' English ability, and lay a solid language foundation for their future study abroad.
Mr. Lubojanski, Head of English of Lucton School Chongqing, holds a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Management, as well as a PGCE, both from the University of Nottingham. He also holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and are currently enrolled on the NPQSL programme at the UCL Institute of Education, best demonstration of being a life-long learner. As an outstanding teacher with over 10 years of English teaching experience, he shared that:
The Renaissance myON reading platform allows students to read many fiction and non-fiction books at their own reading level. They can choose books based on their own interest, which motivates them to read more. It has thousands of books for students to choose from and based around many different school subjects, from science to art.
The platform has many functions that help with students' reading. It first reads the story to the student; the student then reads the story and records their voice for the teacher to check later for pronunciation issues. Finally, the students complete a comprehension question quiz at the end of each book to show whether they understand it and in what ways they struggle to understand it. This can help to inform teachers practice by showing them where their students need more help.
Reading regularly is an important habit to develop. Reading not only supports students’ English language development for reading but also for writing, speaking and listening. Regular reading helps to raise students' overall English levels, improves their grammar and their international awareness, too. Lucton students develop a good habit of reading that helps them to become lifelong learners, prepared for whatever the future holds.
In ESL reading class, students use myON regularly. Some students simply are drowned in reading; Some would take notes and think during reading; Some would share discussions with each other. Teachers will regularly check the use of myON and the progress of reading, share their own reading experience skills, and understand students' English reading ability. Outside the classroom, students also have a fixed reading time on weekend morning in the common room. The goal of each weekend is two hours minimum.
There will also be regular reading contests between Houses. Each House will elect volunteers to read on the stage. This is a great test for students' reading ability, vocabulary and improvisational performance. It is not only because all the reading texts are provided by the teachers last minute, but also because of the large amount of audience and the teacher announcing the winner right on site.
We believe that under the immersive English environment in Lucton School Chongqing, non-native English students can also master English under professional teaching guidance, and become global citizen with English proficiency.
