Lucton Master Class on Student Wellbeing was shared last week.
In the last session, Mr. Binhao Fan, Deputy Head of Lucton School Shanghai, shared with us his novel and yet thought-provoking views from the perspective of an educator and a student.

• How to better transit from state school to international school?
The first stop when entering the international education system is the interview with the Head, which is regarded as another form of written examination, but focusses more on expressive ability. The interview is a process of two-way communication and selection. Children do not need to be too nervous. Just try their best to show their true selves confidently and express thoughts and reasonable demands rather than merely showing strengths.
In international schools, children will gradually learn about personal career development, how to use school resources, and reasonably allocate individual time for independent study. Course selection, co-curricular activities, and competitions are one of the new normal that children will need to adapt to.

• How to deal with loneliness during boarding?
The sense of belonging transfers from home to a new school during boarding. Before boarding, parents can make appropriate communication and scenario discussion with children, dealing with possible emotional challenges. During boarding, some children may feel lonely in the quiet night and this is part of the growth process. The boarding staff will provide comfort and companionship for them, but in the end we all need to let go. In the future, they must learn to face the loneliness by themselves, but it is necessary we need the children know that families will always love and support them.

• How to deal with severe mood swings?
Loneliness in growing up is one of those emotional situations that occur during adolescence. Human bodies develop rapidly in adolescence during which severe mood swing, an inevitable physiological condition, happen. The epidemic in recent years is partly responsible for mood swings. Parents and teachers can try to listen, understand, and guide children to describe their current mental state, and relieve their feelings in a reasonable way. Keep calm while communicating, and discover and solve problems from an empathetic view.

• How to discover children’s small achievements?
The happiness brought by the sense of accomplishment is very natural. Learn to see the world from your children's perspective, walk into their mind, feel joy and pride for every step they make to progress, and encourage them to grow continuously. Adolescence is an important stage for students to understand themselves and explore the environment. With the formation of self-awareness and social development, the term “Career”, gradually entered their life. Career guidance is conducive to enabling students to have a clear study plan and become a better self in the future. Of course, applying to a world-leading university cannot be done overnight. Plan ahead to discover your potential, improve by participating in various social activities, and finally achieve twice the result with half the effort when applying to universities.
