Mr Kintas is the Art & Design teacher at Lucton School Chongqing, teaching the fundamentals of drawing, design and art-making to Year 9, 10 and 11 students. The art & design course is focused on equipping students with a variety of skills, in preparation for IGCSE, AS/A-Level studies and further education in the Arts.
IGCSE Art and Design is all about research, creativity, development and finding solutions to design problems. Students work on coursework throughout the year, building their portfolio of art works and developing their drawing technique and skills to be able to visually express themselves through final artistic works in a clear response to a theme.
Year 11 students have been exploring their themes throughout the term, considering methods, styles, artist inspirations and most importantly through, practice, practice, practice. Through detailed research of a theme, students will work towards a final artwork that demonstrates their understanding of the theme, of visual language and of control of art materials.
Good planning before an art exam is paramount to a successful final work. Planning is achieved through mind mapping key words, researching those key words, linking these words to an idea, sketching and then developing those ideas into something that has strong foundations. This method of building upon an idea is an important part of being an artist.
Assessment Structure
- Component 1
Personal Portfolio: Internally-set personal portfolio of work based on centre-devised theme(s), project(s) or task(s).
- Component 2
Externally-set Assignment: Externally-set assignment based on the same endorsed title as Component 1, to be marked externally.
A student planning a composition of an artwork, with experimentation beginning in their sketchbook, before applying materials to paper.
From sketchbook concept development and annotation, to working on the final artwork with a clear, final outcome in mind.
It is important to seek inspiration in other artists, whilst also applying these ideas and styles to your own artwork, in order to create something new.
Comfort is important in order to be able to effectively create. The facilities of the art department encourage students to have the space and materials needed to express themselves fully, with large desks and an assortment of artist-quality materials available to all students.
To show off the outstanding talents and efforts of hard-working students, we will be displaying framed student artworks on campus. These artworks will be rotated throughput the year, so that the artistic talents of a variety of students can be shared and can inspire all our students to reach for their creativity and for a pencil or paintbrush!
