Chinese classes at Lucton School Chongqing are designed to awaken students' motivation to learn Chinese language and literature, unlock their potential, and develop their reading and writing skills. Students are developing their understanding of the world by reading and discussing diverse classic texts from all times and in all countries. Students are also focusing on approaches and techniques related to directed writing, argumentative writing, discursive writing, descriptive writing, and narrative writing. Students are engaged in multiple activities such as independent research, debate competitions, book sharing, poetry appreciation, impromptu speech, creative writing, relay writing, script writing, text skits, role playing, etc.
Year 9 students are studying argumentative writing, and they are learning about their essay structure and writing techniques by reading high quality argumentative essays. They also learned the basic rules and process of debate tournaments, had several rounds of debates on different topics, learned how to prepare for debates and collect materials comprehensively, developed their debating skills and improved their argumentative writing skills.
They showed professionalism and confidence in all aspects in the last round of debate. Ray S and Nancy G's team won the debate. They performed excellently and won the favor of the judge. The team of Billy Z, Leo L, and Daisy H showed great teamwork in the debate. Daisy H performed outstandingly when stating her team's opinions, and was generous, confident and graceful. I am delight that they are building deeper understanding of debates and getting more confident when writing the statements.
Year 11 is learning descriptive writing methods and skills. I am delighted to see that everyone begins to develop a good habit of carefully highlight the keywords of the topic, setting up the outline and writing according to the outline. Sylva H and Lynn J, as always, showed their confidence and high standard in writing, and kept improving after receiving the teacher's feedback. Daniel D and George C have also made great progress in descriptive writing. They can distinguish descriptive writing from narrative writing, and focus on showing a picture rather than telling a story. They also modified their writing carefully according to the teacher's feedback. I hope Year 11 student can continue to build their confidence in writing and keep their text effective.
